Mieke Beth Thomeer, PhD, is the Pepper Schwartz Endowed Professor in Sexuality and Aging in Family Medicine and Community Health at the Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health (ISGH). She is a medical sociologist with a research focus on gender, sexuality, and aging and training in demography, gerontology, and sociology. Her research uses quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches to consider how sexualities and gender shape intimacy and health dynamics within romantic relationships in mid- and later-life. In addition, she conducts research on family ties and processes more broadly, including parent-adult child ties and childbearing experiences, with this research including a continued focus on aging, gender, and sexualities. Her research on childbearing histories and later-life health has been funded by the National Institute on Aging, and she also has served as a co-I and consultant on multiple National Institutes of Health focused projects on the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ people. She currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journals of Gerontology: Series B, Social Psychology Quarterly, and the Population Research and Policy Review, and she previously was the Deputy Editor for the Journal of Marriage and Family.
