Biography

Andrew Hirst is a doctoral student in Epidemiology in the School of Public Health. He received his MS in Biostatistics from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Prior to starting the PhD program, he worked at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. Under Dr. De-Kun Li, he analyzed data from both maternal health cohort studies linking maternal exposures to pediatric outcomes and environmental case control studies looking at the effects of radiation on colorectal cancer. Under Dr. Paola Gilsanz, he examined risk and protective factors of healthy cognitive aging, including disparities in race and sexual and gender minorities (SGM). His graduate work at UMN has been spent with the MILLS Study looking at the effects of an LGBTQ+ awareness training to reduce disparities within nursing homes and assisted living facilities. His current research interests focus on utilizing advanced analytic methods to investigate health disparities in cognition across the life course.
