Biography

Bassel El Mrawed is a Lebanese Fulbright Scholar and Master of Human Right Student at the University of Minnesota. He has more than 5 years of experience working in the field of nonprofit. While working for more than a year and a half with Amnesty International in the Beirut Regional Offices, Bassel drafted research memos, managed campaign projects, and conducted research reports on migrant and refugee rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and freedom of speech and assembly. Since August 2020, Bassel has been a researcher for a collaborative project between the UN OHCHR and the University of Minnesota's Human Rights Program studying how to secure protection for human rights defenders across the globe. Currently, Bassel continues his research work alongside his studies that will culminate in Spring 2022. He has been actively involved with local and grassroots nonprofit sector by becoming a Minnesota International NGO Network (MINN) Fellow, which has fostered professional collaborations between organizations locally and internationally. For his efforts to advance diversity and equity in the field of management, he has received the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management's Equity and Inclusion Student Fellowship. Through these experiences, Bassel seeks to continue his passion for advancing social justice and equality for marginalized communities by opening an NGO that serves Lebanese minorities in promoting human rights.
